Cedefop has published a special edition of its Working Paper series entitled Human-centred digital transitions and skill mismatches in European workplaces. The publication examines how digital technologies – including artificial intelligence (AI) – are reshaping skill requirements and the extent of skill mismatches in European labour markets.
As automation advances and AI becomes more widespread, upskilling and reskilling strategies are gaining increasing importance. The special issue presents in-depth analyses of microdata from the second wave of the European Skills and Jobs Survey, conducted in 2021, by external researchers. The volume includes ten original research articles exploring the impact of the digital transition on jobs, skills and training across Europe.
The publication addresses, among others, the following topics:
- the impact of digitalisation on training participation and worker well-being;
- the role of organisational learning culture in addressing skill mismatches;
- determinants of demand for digital skills and related age and gender disparities;
- task automation and its implications for worker upskilling;
- skill shortages and firms’ recruitment practices;
- skill gaps in strategic EU sectors, such as AI, defence and education.
The publication contributes to the ongoing debate on the implications of digital transformation for job quality and skills development policies in the EU.
